Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. Groucho Marx

I've loved reading for as long as I can remember. My taste in books has changed over the years, but there are some books from my childhood that I still enjoy. C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, some of Dr. Seuss' books, and the Pooh books are some that I like reading to my son (or having him read to me). And I've discovered other children's books, including some of those that popular children's movies have been based on (Basil of Baker Street, The 101 Dalmatians, The Rescuers).

As an adult I've continued to enjoy science fiction and historical fiction, and come to enjoy mysteries. Some of my favorite authors are Dean Koontz, John Grisham, Dick Francis, P.D. James, Dorothy Gilman, and Ellis Peters. My interest in historical fiction is particularly in Bible times, and in medieval times, especially in the British Isles. I have an entire bookshelf just of books based on the Arthurian legends, plus a much smaller collection of books based on the Robin Hood legends.

I also have an entire bookshelf of non-fiction, what my husband calls my "weird reference" books. These include books on science (mostly applied science - I find inventions more interesting than nature), history (especially the Middle Ages), arts and literature, linguistics, and quite a few books that defy categorization because they are interdisciplinary.

Then there are books related to my Christian faith. These include a variety of devotional books, books on the Christian life, books on the Bible and theology, and more. These books have a way of migrating to my husband's bookshelves, however, as he is a Presbyterian pastor and naturally shares those interests. He also shares my interest in science fiction/fantasy, and as he has a lot books in this genre than I do, I let my books join his carefully alphabetized set of bookshelves.

Can you tell we're a book-loving family?
